WOLLAYTA
The Wolayta, is part of the "Land of the peoples of the South", with capital Soddo (40,000 inhabitants
). The history of
Wolayta is dark, more or less like that of Ethiopia '.
Without going far back in time, it is clear that a mixture of peoples
occurred in the area of \u200b\u200bthe Lakes. The
Wolayta was a small independent kingdom, with its
dynasty feudal system:
was swept away by the soldiers of Menelik II, who arrived on the spot
armed with rifles and cannons, while the warriors of King
Tona, had just
spears wood and leather shields.
The winners, the Amara, considered the Wolayta
as slaves, and if this will leave an imprint
in their minds and their character is revealed
still very reserved and modest.
In this land of 700 sq km, is found appenaun and a half million inhabitants, but for all
there is a significant poverty. The population is
used to live for the day, rather than risking
behind long-term project.
The main activity of the area is agriculture,
still backward, and raising livestock
exists only on a small scale.
The country certainly will come from its underdevelopment,
or so we dream, but you see when
, always too slow and
necessità.La much later than the lead ball that stops the growth of social
Wolayta (as all of Ethiopia)
is the tribal fragmentation.
population is divided into different groups, families, relatives
.
clans are strictly divided into lower and upper
, nobles and commoners, and slaves and free
can not in any way and under any circumstances
over the fences down by tradition
The clan, like DNA, is the indelible mark its individualità.Il Wolayta has a population density of the most high
throughout Ethiopia, more than 180 per sq km
The people live mostly (about 90%) in
humble huts (Tukul), scattered in campagneLa gives the impression that people prefer to live on the street rather than in the huts, a prestigious
time in the country's social life is the weekly day of the market: it represents a '
important opportunity for relations and exchanges more difficult, an event that no one disregards and
to which all are faithful with punctuality.
Long, monotonous, endless chanting, accompanied by clapping and rhythm of drums,
mark the moments of serenity and sadness of these people in the dance expresses all its vitality.
The population is young because the average survival is not high and euthanasia is often the fate
elderly.
One of the most unpleasant aspects of society Wolayta as
the rest of Ethiopia and Africa, is the low and demeaning
account in which the woman was held. It applies to those who give and figlisa as job performance. Its fate is, till the soil, carrying water,
provide wood, prepare food and drink, run to the market to sell the products of his work.
The company recognizes the man as broad authority over the wife, as the children, who show that their dependence on the outside, and be subject to the duty to wash his piedi.La situation is changing, and certainly will change sooner than you think, but the roots come from
ancient traditions and resist even now that the story has transcended the boundaries of the 3rd millennium!
The Gospel, which this country needs, may be an announcement, but before that a 'good works.
